Throughout his decades-long career, Tom Cruise has played a lot of iconic roles — but one in particular that fans hold close to their hearts is his turn as Leiutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in 1986's classic , which he starred in alongside Val Kilmer. There's been a lot of traction from audiences to get a sequel going.

In response to that excitement, talks about a second adventure for Maverick and Iceman have been swirling around for years. Earlier this month, during a Reddit AMA, was asked whether the sequel would ever see the light of day. The actor responded with enthusiasm, but other than that — and a few tantalizing teases from Tom Cruise — nothing was set in stone ... until now, that is.

Cruise appeared on the Australian talkshow, Sunrise. The actor was directly asked whether we'd get to see a . The actor responded, seemingly surprising himself by the announcement:

"Yes, it's true. It's true."

As to when the film would go in front of the cameras, Cruise revealed that would happen next year:

"You know what? I'm going to start filming it probably in the next year. It is definitely happening."

That's right, Top Gun 2 is not only actually happening, it's going to start filming as soon as next year. Could the news get any more awesome than that? Now, with this confirmation, you might be wondering...

What Will The Sequel Be About?

Surprisingly, we already have a hint of what the film will deal with. Producer Jerry Bruckhaimer sat down for an interview with the Huffington Post in 2014. There, he revealed Top Gun's director, Tony Scott, came up with the story before his death:

“The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones? Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay. It’s just getting to the starting place.”

Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer fighting to stay relevant in the age of unmanned warfare? That's an incredible idea. It would have the chance to tackle relevant concerns about technology, while also offering a great potential storyline for the sequel.

Going by how fast things are moving, I wouldn't be surprised if we get Top Gun 2 in theaters as early as 2019. Fortunately, from the excitement shown by both Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise, it's going to be a fulfilling experience for fans, as they'll be able to see Iceman and Maverick together once again.

First we'll see Tom Cruise in action in , which hits theaters on June 9, 2017.

What do you think about Top Gun 2 finally happening? Are you happy with the storyline the film is going with? Let me know in the comments!
