A film that has "Oscar contender" written all over it is one that normally generates a lot of buzz, especially if it's coming from the Weinstein Company, yet the talk swirling around biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom has been remarkably quiet. But today, THR revealed a new poster for the film, showing quintessential badass thespian in the lead role of Nelson Mandela.
The film is based on Mandela's biography of the same name, chronicling his childhood, coming of age, and the almost three decades he spent in prison for political treason by an oppressive government, only to be released 27 years later to become South Africa's first black President and the first elected in a fully representative election. Revolutionary, political prisoner, President, visionary, Nobel Peace Prize winner, this film has all the hallmarks of potentially earning Elba his first Best Actor award.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom also stars , , Riaad Moosa, Zolani Mkiva, , Lindiwe Matshikiza, Deon Lotz and . The film will be in theaters just in time for the awards season push on November 29th.
