True Detective is fantastic HBO show — at least, it was. Season 1, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, became one of the most-loved seasons of television ever; it's still regarded as a masterpiece today.

Season 2, however, did not garner much praise; in fact, it's actually rather disliked. The cast — Vince Vaughan, Rachel McAdams and Colin Farrell — sounded great on paper, but the second season itself was drab, boring and just didn't have quite the same magic as the first.
Nevertheless, fans of the show are still desperate to see a third season from showrunner Nic Pizzolatto and the rest of the team at #HBO. And we're in luck, because Pizzolatto had this to say when asked if he's written any episodes yet for Season 3:
"at least the first two episodes."
Additionally, Emmy-winning writer/producer David Milch (NYPD Blue, Deadwood) is on board for the Season 3 writing team. Is the followup to True Detective Season 1 that fans know we deserve finally coming?
It needs HBO's green-light, of course, but it's time to start wondering who would star in a new season. We would love to see McConaughey and Harrelson come back, but even if they don't, the series still has the cache to attract some of Hollywood's biggest names. Here are some A-list actors who'd fit right in with the show's vibe.
1. Jake Gyllenhaal
First up on our list is one of Hollywood's best and most versatile actors, Jake Gyllenhaal. Movies such as Prisoners, Nightcrawler and Donnie Darko prove that he would be a pitch-perfect fit for True Detective. He believably played a rugged cop in End of Watch, and we know he can handle dark, moody material. I'd love to see him either play the villain for Season 3.
2. Jim Carrey
Yes, Carrey is best known for comedic roles, but Vince Vaughan and Matthew McConaughey have done plenty of those too — and we know Carrey is a skilled dramatic actor. Just check out his edgy, erratic performance in The Number 23. I know it wasn't a fantastic movie, but I think it showed potential for what Carrey can do in True Detective. Also, it would be great to see a comeback from him! I could totally see him in the role of a police commander who's always pissed off.

3. Jodie Foster
A brilliant actress known for classics such as Contact, The Silence of the Lambs and Panic Room, Jodie Foster hasn't appeared in a movie since 2013's Elysium. Since then, she's focused on directing, releasing the movie Money Monster (starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney) last year. I'd love to see an on-screen comeback from the double-Oscar winning actress, particularly in the role of a mob villain or rundown cop — but she can play any role really.
4. Naomie Harris
Naomie Harris is a fantastic actress who is finally getting recognition since her role in last year's Oscar Best Picture winner Moonlight. She's also been in Skyfall and 28 Days Later. I'd love to see Naomie Harris in the role of either a crooked cop or a goody-two-shoes cop — I really feel she has the range to play either!
5. Benicio Del Toro
Benicio Del Toro is undoubtedly one of the coolest actors in Hollywood. He could simultaneously play the leader of the worst mob gang in a city or the most by-the-books cop in a precinct. Either way, I'd love to see him turn out for True Detective Season 3 — and I've felt that way ever since I saw him in the action-thriller Sicario in 2015.
Of all the people on this list, I think it's between Jodie Foster and Jake Gyllenhaal for me. Either way, I'm excited to see who HBO recruit for the third season of its hit show. I hope they confirm the season, so that we can speculate on the cast even further!
