Last season of The Walking Dead was a tough one for fans, as we saw our favorite group of survivors repeatedly get steamrolled by Negan and his Saviors. Rick Grimes was a powerless shell of himself after Negan's bloody arrival — but now that is about to change.

appeared alongside much of TWD's cast this past weekend at New York Comic Con to discuss the upcoming Season 8. According to Lincoln, Rick will finally be "getting his strut back." About damn time!

As a viewer, it was difficult to see Rick — who'd overcome so many previous foes — bow down to Negan without putting up much of a fight. The Season 7 finale gave Rick the motivation to find his old self after being double-crossed by the Scavengers. Now with the help of the Hilltop, the Kingdom and his fellow Alexandrians, Rick is ready for the "All Out War."

Lincoln is also glad to say goodbye to Season 7's defeated Rick. He told the panel attendees:

"He had a taste of [peace], then this goddamned Negan guy showed up … I hate Negan — I love Jeffrey, but I hate Negan. I'm so happy to be playing that man, and not last season's Rick."

So what can we expect from Rick and his newfound strength in the battle against Negan? The All Out War storyline in the comics has Rick and his army attack the Sanctuary while other members go after the various Savior outposts. The actions are effective but the ongoing fight results in a few key deaths. This correlates with Lincoln's tease that "big deaths" are on the horizon. (We hope this isn't a tease regarding Lincoln's thoughts that the series could continue after Rick Grimes's death.)

There is still plenty of story to tell, whether Rick is at the forefront or not. It will be interesting to see how closely the series follows the comic material without making it too predictable — but we're definitely excited to learn more about Rick's old man mystery scene and the upcoming crossover event with Fear the Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead returns for its 100th episode, October 22 on AMC.
