For those of us who came of age in the ‘90s, Jay and Silent Bob were prominent figures in our cultural landscape. The two unambitious stoners entertained a generation of fans with perverse jokes and acute homoeroticism. I don’t know how many times I heard the phrase “Snootchie Boochies”, or someone repeating back the lines from Jay’s Rap from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in high school – but I assure you, it was a lot.

Watch Jay's Rap unedited in its entirety below:

Even though the characters are crude, not very bright, and morally ambiguous, they still hold a special place in the hearts of many. We last saw of these rascals was in the 2006 film Clerks II; Kevin Smith recently took to social media to let us know that we'll be seeing the characters again very soon.

Kevin Smith Announces Jay And Silent Bob Reboot

As of late, Kevin Smith has been shopping his Clerks and Mallrats properties to several different studios, in the hopes of securing a sequel or a TV show. Sadly, over on Instagram, Kevin Smith confirmed that both projects are dead in the water. Due to some legal constrains, Smith could not move ahead on any continuation of Dogma, Mallrats, Clerks, or Chasing Amy on his own.

This is sad news for fans of these films; however, there is a silver lining. While does not own the rights to several of his films, he does own the rights to Jay and Silent Bob. So, Kevin Smith has done what he does best: he shrugs off his disappointment and moves on to the next thing. Kevin Smith used his Instagram and Twitter accounts and announced his new project, to the delight of his fans. Check out a snippet of his announcement below:

So I don't own Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy or Dogma... But I DO own . So while I love playing with someone else's new toys on @cwtheflash and @Supergirl, I'm getting eager to play with my old toys again in the inter-connected View Askewniverse I spent the first half of my career creating. And so all last month, I had the time of my life laughing while writing "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" - a fun flick in which the Jersey boys have to go back to Hollywood to stop a brand new reboot of the old "Bluntman & Chronic Movie" they hated so much. It's a tongue-in-cheek, silly-ass satire that pokes fun at the movie business's recent re-do obsession, featuring an all-star cast of cameos and familiar faces! And I already met with the good folks at Miramax and they're into it, so I'm hoping we'll be shooting in the summer! Never give up, kids. You CAN do anything you want in life, so long as you're patient and malleable.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

I must say, Kevin Smith is very open and honest with his fans. Not only does he share the announcement directly on his Instagram and Twitter feeds, but he offers a full synopsis of the film. Jay and Silent Bob's Reboot will follow the same storyline as Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but with a subtle twist.

In this film, Jay and Silent Bob will be traveling to Hollywood to stop Bluntman and Chronic from getting rebooted – which is already a wonderful satire on modern Hollywood. We all know that the first law of Hollywood is anything that can be rebooted, will be rebooted.

There were a ton of celebrity cameos in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, including stars like Ben Affleck and Mark Hamill. It appears Jay and Silent Bob Reboot will follow suit, and Kevin Smith confirms there will be “all-star cast of cameos and familiar faces”.

The best part? Kevin Smith has already met with the folks over at Miramax and plans to begin filming this summer. Kevin Smith was smart by making sure all his ducks were in a row before he began making announcements on social media. If we have learned anything from the DCEU, it’s you don’t start announcing films until things are in motion.

Fan Reaction To Jay And Silent Bob Reboot

I am very excited for to see the continuing adventures of Jay and Silent Bob, and I’m not the only one. Twitter responded positively to the announcement, and all the nostalgia that millennials love came rushing back in a flood of excitement and wonder – or maybe everyone's just excited Smith isn’t doing Tusk 2:

That last tweet is the perfect snapshot of everything that embody. Sure, they are grown men who smoke weed all day and creep on women, but at the end of the day, they accept who they are. When I first encountered the characters, I didn’t quite understand why they were so appealing. They are funny in their own way, but as I get older I understand that their appeal is based on self-awareness. Much like their creator Kevin Smith (see tweet below), the characters know exactly who they are, and what they bring to the table – and they give zero fucks what you think.

is probably a year or so from being released, but I can’t wait to see what Kevin Smith does with this film. If you haven’t seen Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in a while, I suggest you go ahead and revisit it. The film holds up surprisingly well, and the satire is still spot on – especially the bit about internet trolls. If you are having a hard time waiting for the new film, you can always revisit Kevin Smith’s diverse catalog from Clerks to Yoga Hosers.
