Ever since Spider-Gwen's debut in The Amazing Spider-Man comics, she has been well-received and quite popular in the cosplay world. So naturally she would be a possible candidate for the MCU in the minds of fans. To many fans, when a character makes the big screen, it is the ultimate sign of respect for the character's true popularity. But with the MCU being so far along and #SpiderMan finally receiving a film in the MCU after all these years, how could she fit? Personally I think good ole' Doctor Strange answered our question for us.
Aliens, Inter-dimensional Travel And More
While Marvel's The Avengers was the first film to really open up the possibilities of aliens and otherworldly creatures attacking Earth, it still did not stretch the #MCU far enough away from reality. Doctor Strange, on the other hand, broke down the door of reality and chopped it up with an axe. In Doctor Strange, we are introduced to the concept of there being many dimensions and times other than our own. This concept changed the MCU to more mirror that of the current comics, where inter-dimensional travel is far from unheard of. Ultimately, this allows for a freedom of space for characters. They no longer have to fight for space in one universe but now can move across many, which brings me back to the topic of this article.
How Spider-Gwen Can Fit Into The MCU: Theory No. 1
The first option of Spider-Gwen's potential way of fitting into the MCU can now happen thanks to Doctor Strange. Her backstory in the comics consisted of her being bitten by a radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker. Gwen would then be known as Spider-Woman to the media and fight crime for her own personal glory. That's when Peter Parker attempts an experiment to try and make himself special like Spider-Woman but it goes wrong (go figure). He then becomes Earth-65's version of The Lizard and seeks revenge on all those who bullied him in school. Spider-Gwen ultimately defeated The Lizard, but Peter died due to injuries when he returned to his human form. From here, most of her story is pretty close to a mirror of our beloved Peter Parker.
Now, the way should would fit into the MCU would be different from what happens to her in the comics. In the comics, she becomes apart of an inter-dimensional Marvel Spider-war event called Spider-Verse. Instead of joining the Spider-Verse, Spider-Gwen could in fact be asked to help fight in the Infinity War. Doctor Strange could potentially track her down through time in an attempt to gather up as many heroes as possible to face Thanos. (Perhaps this would take place in Avengers: Infinity War Part II?) She may be apart of a reinforcement search conducted by Doctor Strange if things seem to be heading south by the end of Avengers: Infinity War Part I. This would be a fresh take on the character while staying true to her comic origin.
Theory No. 2
Option two for Spider-Gwen in the MCU may seem about complex, but is definitely worth checking out. At the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 we saw Gwen Stacy fall to her death that was inspired by her notorious end in The Amazing Spider-Man #121. We then at the very end of the film see Spider-Man return to action after roughly a six-month absence to take on The Rhino. Alright, so here is where my theory comes in. What if Spider-Man died in his battle against The Rhino? Many fans have already chosen to accept this theory (that circulated the Internet for awhile) to help soften the blow of the discontinuation of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.
What if Gwen Stacy was brought back to life be none other than Miles Warren? Now before you tune me out, I was also not a fan of The Clone Saga. That said, I am a fan of the current Spider-Man event, The Clone Conspiracy, that is being written by Dan Slott. The Clone Conspiracy has some similar feels to that of The Clone Saga, but this time the clones are not actually clones. Miles Warren claims that the clones are actually the "real deal," with memories and all. So far, the event is still in its beginning stages, but the concept would definitely be interesting to see in the MCU.
How does this fit considering #TheAmazingSpiderMan franchise is not connected to Marvel Studios? Well let's go back to Doctor Strange. He travel between dimensions, remember? That means he has the ability to look for help through all dimensions leading up to Avengers: Infinity War Part I and II. Perhaps Miles brings Gwen Stacy back to life with all of her memories and decides to test Spider-Man's DNA on her. She then gains Spider-Man's powers and takes down Miles Warren. Spider-Gwen would then be the new Spider-Man of the Sony Universe. This is how Doctor Strange would find her, as he sees her as a good asset for the Infinity War. We would then get the chance to see Gwen struggle with fighting a war in another dimension, dealing with Peter's death and dealing with memories of her own death — talk about some drama!
Would Emma Stone Return If Theory No. 2 Happens?
Obviously if theory No. 2 were to happen, Emma Stone would probably have to reprise the role to keep things accurate. In the interview above, Stone states that she wouldn't mind playing the character, but the right situation would have to happen.
"Yeah, I don’t know. I know nothing about it, but I have read 'Spider-Gwen.' That’s all I know. I think a lot of pieces would have to come together."
Only time will tell if she ever if offered the role in some way, shape or form ever again. Although, she didn't completely turn the idea down.
While both my theories have some exciting concepts, there are still many details to be worked out. Especially in theory No. 2, considering Parker DNA is the only one compatible with spider venom. That said, theory No. 1 does have a decent chance of happening in the future and I think it will be really interesting to see where #Marvel goes in the next couple of years. Until then, we will just have to wait and see.
