Average ratings for The Originals spin-off episode of The Vampire Diaries didn't deter The CW from proceeding with making the episode-pilot into a series, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The backdoor pilot for The Originals, which stars some existing TVD cast members, aired last Thursday and drew in around 2.2 million viewers. Although that's far from a record-breaking figure for a pilot, CW President Mark Pedowitz seemed more than happy, stating that:

As soon as we saw last night's episode of The Vampire Diaries, we knew we wanted more of The Originals. Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson have done a fantastic job with The Vampire Diaries, which is as fast-paced and well-written as ever, and Julie has created an equally compelling world for The Originals.

The CW's decision to pick up the show is not particularly surprising, considering the already standing success of The Vampire Diaries. The network also picked up a second season of Beauty and the Beast and a third year of Hart of Dixie.

We may be celebrating now, but we'll have to wait until at least September to find out how the rest of the story unfolds. Still, is this the best news EVER?
