With The Vampire Diaries Season 5 gearing up to air after a summer filled off-camera relationship drama for costars and , it's nice to see that the pair of former lovebirds are apparently over their break up enough to work together without any (noticeable, at least) awkwardness.

They were recently together for a promotional photoshoot for the upcoming season, and a few images have been released showing a stunning Nina staring into a light and a brooding Ian staring into the camera.

But all's not completely well on set, it would appear. Somerhalder recently revealed that sometimes, his fictional life hits a little too close to home:

Don't for a second think it's always cotton candy. Sometimes it really hurts, and a lot of stuff that Damon goes through is super cathartic for me as an individual. It's not always pretty - it stirs up stuff.

You are basically muddying the water all the time. You are pulling from all these things in your life that are not necessarily good, so it's basically like getting paid for therapy instead of going and sitting in someone's chair and going, 'Tell me about how you feel'.

It's not always fun. Sometimes it's brutal and I'll walk off set and I'll cry for ten minutes alone in my trailer and I look at myself in the mirror and go, 'What the hell are you doing? Why are you crying in the trailer? Go have a coffee or something'.

But for me, that's acting - that's what I do every day. It's pretty weird.

Hopefully, they'll have sorted things out by the time Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries premieres next month, or they're going to have a long season of shooting ahead of them.
