I can't tell if it's surprising or predictable that one of the year's most important movies about American slavery was directed by a British man, , along with a largely UK cast, including , , and . Regardless, this is definitely on my must-see list. Whereas Lee Daniels' The Butler took a look at race relations in the 20th Century (some would say with a Forrest Gump lens), this movie seems to illuminate our ideas about race today by taking an unflinching look at the USA's darkest time.
