The new trailer for director 's The Canyons wears its crowd-sourced heart on its sleeve. It opens with troubled star talking about how movies aren't her "thing" anymore as images of dead theaters flash across your Internet browser. It blurs the line between the character Lohan is playing and her real life persona. After all, while promoting her Lifetime film Liz and Dick, she admits to questioning if acting is what she really loves to do. She and her character Tara represent the new film economy outside of the studio system: Someone who is meant to be built up, torn down, and mostly appear on VOD and YouTube clips.

Naturally, the trailer also highlights 's unapologetic porn career as the trailer cuts to his face when a character asks, "What do you mean you make your own movies?" Anyone who watches trend pieces on ABC News, looks at adult websites, or reads tabloids about Teen Mom's Farrah Abraham knows the answer.

It's all surprisingly smart, especially for a movie that has been rejected by film festivals. Does this mean its good? Maybe. Maybe not. But it is intriguing. Schrader, writer , and the film's cast have created a perfect buzz storm due to its spicy elements, but also showing that the way we perceived movies and fame in the past is gone.

The Canyons opens in New York City on August 2. You'll also be able to watch it on VOD the same day. Lincoln Center will also be hosting an event with Schrader and show the premiere of the film on July 29.
