Ragnar, Rollo, Floki, Lagertha, these are just some of the names of those great figures that The History Channel has brought to us with . Although the show has romanticized their adventures, make no mistake — the Northmen were the a wave of terror, bringing forth the dark ages of Europe. Yet, among all of these terrible characters that are remembered, there is one that has stood out. He was a brutal warrior who cared for nothing but bringing death to the kingdoms of England.

Ivar The Boneless, played magnificently by Denmark native Alex Høgh Andersen has risen to become one of the most interesting characters, not just because of his struggles dealing with a physical disability in a time where being strong meant everything to their culture, but also for his dark passion to embrace the violent legacy that is being a Viking.

The True History Of Ivar The Boneless

Ivar, son of Ragnar and Aslaug, was a ruthless commander and a master tactician, able to overcome the combined forces of East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Mercia, Northumbria, Sussex and Wessex. History says he suffered from a disease called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which made him appear "boneless" to those around him. However, Viking lore said he was born cursed due to his parents not waiting three nights before consummating their marriage. Legend also says he was the firstborn son of Ragnar, not Björn Ironside as the show depicts.

Next season, Vikings will showcase the violent adventures of Ivar the Boneless as he begins his reign of terror on the English Kingdoms. Much like the historical depictions of his exploits, Ivar's journey in Season 5 will focus on his cunning madness and lack of empathy for all things Christian, and yes, there will be blood. Make no mistake, if the manner of which he killed his own brother Sigurd hasn't set the tone for what is to come next, the trailer below will. Ivar will set into motion events that will make his escapades legend, and bring forth the real dark ages of Europe.

What do you hope to see Ivar the Boneless do in Vikings Season 5?
