In this age of casual Tinder hook-ups and Netflix and chill, it can seem impossible to find an example of true, everlasting love. On-screen depictions of romance are either highly problematic or completely unrealistic, which in turn creates a whole new generation of people who don't have the slightest clue on how to navigate the world of relationships.
Thankfully, there's still one on-screen power couple showing us all how it's done. Fans of #TheWalkingDead may know Negan as a ruthless, twisted psychopath, but there's another side to the swaggering villain. Under that leather jacket is a heart of gold, and it belongs to a lady called Lucille.

A Love Like No Other
Negan and Lucille's bond is so much more than just a man and his murder weapon. Their relationship is quite possibly one of the most positive examples of modern romance on TV, the kind of connection that most people search their whole lives for. And like any successful relationship, it's the product of plenty of hard work and dedication.
Still not convinced? Just take a look at the cornerstones of Lucille and Negan's love affair — the evidence speaks for itself:
Negan isn't ashamed to be vocal about his love for Lucille. When you're in love, you want the whole world to know! For Negan, it's important that Lucille is treated like a lady. In his eyes, she deserves everyone's respect and admiration. He speaks fondly of her, showering her with compliments and admiration. And he makes damn sure that everyone around him is on the same page. You insult Lucille, you insult Negan himself.
But obviously, actions speak louder than words. Negan is incredibly attentive to Lucille's needs. When he drops in to Alexandria, he goes to all the trouble of cooking a superb spaghetti dinner, and seating her right next to him at the table. She even gets her own plate.
And of course, we all know how diligent he is to make sure she never goes thirsty. He didn't have to smash in the brains of two of Rick's most beloved group members, but god forbid Lucille gets dehydrated! This guy is literally wining and dining his baseball bat. If that's not love, I don't want to know what is.
Relationships aren't as straightforward as they used to be. Monogamy isn't the only option, people! Even in the crazy world that is the zombie apocalypse, Negan and Lucille are a shining example of open relationships done right. Sure, Negan has his harem of women back at the Sanctuary. But does that diminish what he and Lucille have? Hell no! He's committed to her, regardless of how many other wives he might accumulate.
Negan's not the jealous type, either. Okay, so he might iron the odd face of whoever sleeps with one of his wives behind his back. But Negan knows he can trust Lucille to be escorted around Alexandria by the likes of Rick "Hot Cop" Grimes and not have to feel threatened. It's called trust.
You know, Rick's a handsome guy. He sure didn't seem to let the fact that Jessie was married stop feelings from developing. Will Rick and Lucille be the next hot couple when Season 7 returns? Who can say! Let's hope Michonne and Negan are cool with this new relationship dynamic.
Your partner should be your best friend, the kind of person you'd still want to hang out with, even if you weren't romantically involved. Luckily, Lucille and Negan have almost identical interests. Like taking romantic walks through the Sanctuary, hanging out with other homicidal bandits, and of course, gruesome murdering. You know, just cute couple stuff. In fact, Negan loves hanging out with his lady so much that he can't ever seem to stop grinning.
Negan even brings in budding young musician Carl Grimes — a.k.a. the Justin Bieber of the walker wasteland — to serenade them in the privacy of their own home. So romantic!
Not everyone is smitten with these lovebirds. In fact, some people are downright jealous. In the mid-season finale, Rosita lost her patience and attempted to take out Negan. But what she didn't realize was that Lucille's love for Negan could withstand anything. That's right, Lucille literally threw herself in the line of fire and took a bullet for her beloved. And Negan was not happy:
"Shit! What the shit?! Shit! You just -- You tried to kill me?! You shot Lucille!"
These two are willing to protect each other, no matter what the cost. It really is Negan and Lucille against the world.
