Last year's summer blockbuster Suicide Squad was undoubtedly one of the most polarising films in Warner Bros. history. While the comic book ensemble film wasn't well-received by critics (or even some fans), it went on to make over $800 million at the global box-office, and even picked up an Oscar.
Thus, it's easy to see why Amanda Waller, Rick Flag, Harley Quinn and the rest of the Squad will be back in a highly-anticipated sequel. However, that sequel may arrive sooner than we initially expected.
While The Hollywood Reporter recently confirmed that the Warner plans to make the rumored Joker/Harley Quinn spinoff film, they also uncovered that the studio is fast-tracking Suicide Squad 2, with hopes of getting it released as soon as possible.
This coincides with Rick Flag actor Joel Kinnaman's recent comments when he revealed that a script is currently being written, with hopes for filming to begin in 2018. He commented:
"As far as I know they're writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I'll definitely come back for it."
However, despite the eagerness to get started on the #SuicideSquad sequel, Warner Bros. must overcome a few issues. With names like Mel Gibson and Jaume Collet-Serra previously attached to the project, the film is now without a director. And this is something the studio must overcome quickly if they want to fast-track the film's release.
A Busy Schedule For Warner Bros. (And The Joker)
To say that Warner Bros. has been busy lately would be a major understatement. In the past few days, the studio has greenlit a Martin Scorsese-produced Joker origin story prequel set to take place outside the #DCEU, while also confirming that we would see their current Joker return in both #SuicideSquad2 and #GothamCitySirens. Furthermore, the confirmation that we will see the rumoured Joker/Harley Quinn spinoff film, proves that while Jared Leto's Joker may not be in the origin story film, the actor will be incredibly busy.
As well as those films, the studio also has Aquaman, Wonder Woman 2, The Flash: Flashpoint and presumably The Batman in the works, before they turn their attention to Cyborg, Shazam, Black Adam, Nightwing and Batgirl solo films.
It's safe to say that Warner Bros. has a lot of DC films on the horizon. But it appears that they're moving Suicide Squad 2 to the top of the pile. Given that the first one ended up being so successful, despite negative reviews, as well as Jared Leto's busy schedule, it's no surprise that the studio is eager to get started on the one of their many films featuring the Joker. But before they can make it happen, they must find a new director.
Prepare yourselves, the world's worst #superheroes will be back!
