As of yet, there's still no US release date set, but since thefilmstage.com has reported that The Weinstein Company (the distributors) held a test screening of the film last week it'll probably be in cinemas by fall.
Snowpiercer looks like it's going to be one of the most memorable and moving films of 2013. It's set in a dystopian future where an experimental attempt to stop global warming ushered in a new ice age which has killed off almost all life on Earth. The only survivors live on the 'Snowpiercer', which is a giant train travelling around the planet that is powered by a 'perpetual-motion engine'. As time passes, a class system springs up, with the high class inhabitants occupying the front of the train and the poor being forced to stay at the back. Fed up of their poor living conditions, the riders at the back spearhead a revolution, attempting to seize control of the engine which the elite consider sacred...
Snowpiercer is based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette.
The film stars (Captain America, The Avengers), , (Billy Elliot, The Adventures of Tintin), (The Newsroom), (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Melancholia), (Moonrise Kingdom, We Need To Talk About Kevin), (The Help) and (Pain & Gain, Man on a Ledge).
The word 'fantastic' feels like an understatement. Don't believe me? Whet your appetite with this first trailer:
There's also some featurettes available which include interviews with members of the cast (in English) and behind the scenes footage. The only problem is that most of the footage is in Korean and this hasn't been translated. All the same, it's still worth a watch if you're as excited about this film as I am, as it gives you a better idea of the film's plot and characters. Plus, there's a good thirty second shot of Tilda Swinton mucking about with her four dogs at the beach in Scotland in the second to last video, and really, what's lovelier than that?
Excited? Very, very, very excited? Actually, couldn't care less? Sound off below!
