Remember way back when 's Electro was all but confirmed and we amused ourselves by imagining who else could show up in 's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 instead? Well, looks like one of my choices is on the road to becoming reality...

According to The Hollywood Reporter Hangover 2 scene-stealer extraordinare is in talks to play Russian rammer Aleksei Sytsevich, aka Rhino.

I'm of the opinion that Giamatti either knew of this for quite some time or willed it into happening. The proof? Giamatti mentioned it very specifically while talking with Conan O'Brien nearly two years ago. Watch:

In fact, he's been talking it up all over the place. He told The Showbiz Spy back in 2011:

I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid. It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies,’ but maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me. If they ever go with The Rhino I would be ready and waiting.

Looks like Giamatti is about to get his childhood wish. Frankly, this is an awesome development. It's not uncommon for a Spider-Man flick to have more than one villain (I'm talking about you, ), and to me Rhino is rather sympathetic in a lot of ways. The big guy's had a tough time of it trying to break through in the Big Apple. (See what I did there?)

The big question in my mind is which Rhino they're going to go with. He starts out as a baddie and as the years went by he became more of an ally to Spidey. The fact that Giamatti repeatedly refers to him as a villain and that Electro is appearing presumably after he's just been transformed (he first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #9) would bring us closer to the start of Rhino's career (which started with The Amazing Spider-Man #41) and therefore a villain rather than an accomplice. Latino Review even posits an interesting theory about Rhino being connected to failed Oscorp experiments, in line with the Amazing Spider-Man game.

I'm getting ready for some major headbutting. What do you think about the possibility of Rhino showing up in The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Tell me in the comments!
