Hugh Jackman's final appearance as Wolverine in Logan is a sombre R-rated, post-apocalyptic take on the X-Men franchise, set in 2024. To help add inescapable authenticity to the fictional world of decay, Logan was filmed amidst the intimidating backdrop of imposing structures and dehydrated landscapes.
With a budget of $127 million, director James Mangold and his team had enough money in the bank to explore all corners of the globe to discover the perfect dust-covered canvas. However, all of the locations were filmed within the US, from New Orleans to New Mexico. Below are some of the key filming locations of Logan.
NASA Michoud Assembly Facility
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
A number of #Logan scenes were filmed in New Orleans, Louisiana, due to its filming incentive of 40 per cent tax credit. One key location was NASA's facility, which was originally constructed in 1940 as part of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.
The vast complex covers 832 acres with 3,700 people working on site, making it one of the biggest manufacturing plants in the world. A number of different organizations use the site, including the National Finance Center and, of course, NASA, who are working on the Space Launch System — the most powerful rocket ever made.
One of the organizations within the sprawling plant is a New Orleans film studio, Big Easy Studios, providing the link with between NASA and Fox's superhero extravaganza. Most of the filming around the area was done outside; #Wolverine himself, #HughJackman, was spotted at the facility, shooting a fight scene with "federal agents."
Location: Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana.
Don't let the name fool you; Amite City is a small town with a population of just over 4,000, with the Blythewood Plantation House forming one of its most notable attractions. Only those who have some insight into the city already will recognise the town in Logan, as the front of local shops were replaced with fake signs to transform the town into the perfect X-Men destination.
Logan isn't the first high-profile film to use Amite City as a filming location. Over recent years, a few films have capitalized the picturesque backdrop, including 2012's On the Road (starring Kristen Stewart and Amy Adams) and action comedy 2 Guns (2013) starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg.
Ferriday Plaza Shopping Center
Location: Ferriday, Louisiana.
A number of external scenes in Logan were shot in Louisiana around June 2016, in particular US Route 425 — which was closed for five days to allow the shoot — and Louisiana Highway 15. Along the route, filming took place at the Sicily Island High School and the Ferriday Shopping Center, located around 30 kilometers from the high school. The shopping center was used for exterior shots and also by the production team for storing equipment in between takes.
Northern Meadows, Rio Rancho
Location: New Mexico
Outside of Louisiana, the biggest Logan filming location was in New Mexico, including areas such as Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Tierra Amarilla. Around 130 crew members and 600 extras were put to work throughout the time spent filming. The backdrop will also be familiar to Breaking Bad fans.
The production team for Logan spent time filming on the Northern Meadows housing estate, located in Rio Rancho. Nearby in King Boulevard, a sophisticated, decrepit set was constructed, featuring decaying buildings and an overturned water tower. A number of scenes between Wolverine, X-23 and Boyd Holbrook's villain, Donald Pierce, were shot at this location, and can be spotted in the film's trailer.
