Which Gladers Have Escaped The Maze, Survived The Scorch And Are On The Hunt For ‘The Death Cure’?

Posted by Alex Scorseby

For three years, young men awoke in the Glade, a fine green space surrounded by a giant maze. With no memories or awareness of who put them there or why, the Gladers set up their own minor society and explored the Maze looking for a way out.

The Maze Runner told that story. The handful of Gladers who escaped, led by Thomas and the last arrival, Teresa, continued to learn about how and why they’d ended up in the Glade in the sequel film, The Scorch Trials. The sequel told us a lot more about the organization WCKD, which created the Maze and the Glade, and ended with power landing fully in WCKD’s hands.

Now everyone still alive is looking to push deep into WCKD territory in Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which hits theaters on January 26.

Here’s who is still around for the third movie, and what they might get up to.

Note: Spoilers for the first two films follow.

The Gladers

The three core Gladers still in the running to save the future of mankind are Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Frypan (Dexter Darden).

With Thomas in the lead, that trio escaped the Maze and passed through dangers in the world outside the first WCKD compound – they fought humans turned into vicious, mindless Cranks by the Flare virus, and escaped the clutches of well-armed WCKD soldiers. Now they’re heading into the primary city run by WCKD to make a daring rescue. Why? That has to do with another escaped Glader.

Minho (Ki Hong Lee), who was alongside Thomas when he discovered the way out of the Maze, but he didn’t get through the second movie without new problems. Minho was captured by WCKD at the end of The Scorch Trials, and Thomas has pledged to come to his friend’s aid. So The Death Cure begins with that effort, a year after the events of the last movie.

The Allies

Meanwhile, Aris (Jacob Lofland), who was originally trapped in a different Maze, also escaped WCKD’s compound with Thomas and friends in The Scorch Trials. He and a friend from his Glade, Sonya (Katherine McNamara), also seemed to be taken by WCKD when the force attacked the Right Arm rebels out in the mountains at the climax of The Scorch Trials.

Honestly, Aris and Sonya kinda just disappear from that movie, but given that they’re all credited as being in The Death Cure we’re going on faith that they’ll appear in more than flashbacks.

There are more than just ex-Gladers in the mix this time, however. The Right Arm rebels aren’t exactly going strong after the end of The Scorch Trials, but Vince (Barry Pepper) and Harriet (Nathalie Emmanuel) are both ready to chip in with the rescue effort and the plan to hopefully find a cure for the Flare.

(OK, technically Harriet is a former Glader, as she was part of the cohort at the center of a different maze that also contained Aris and Sonya.)

And Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito) and Brenda (Rosa Salazar), the duo who helped the Gladers reach the Right Arm rebels in The Scorch Trials, are front and center in the new resistance group that has pledged to get Minho back from WCKD. No matter that Brenda was bitten by a Crank and may have to face real infection by the Flare – they’re ready to fight.

WCKD

Finally, the forces of WCKD are armed, ready, and devious, with leaders Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson) and Janson (Aidan Gillen) determined to enact their own plan to save humanity, no matter the cost. Maybe that’s actually “save” humanity, as we don’t have any reason to believe that WCKD’s stated purpose is what the group is actually trying to do. There’s so much deceit in their actions and statements that, like Thomas & Co., we doubt everything they say.

Let’s not forget Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), who escaped the Maze at the end of The Maze Runner but changed sides at the end of The Scorch Trials. (Maybe it’s that she actually revealed her true colors, which would be more true to the books.) Teresa flew off with the WCKD forces at the end of the movie. We know she and Thomas will reunite in some way in The Death Cure, but we don’t know if their relationship and conflict will resolve in the same way it does in the books.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure opens on January 26. Who do you think will still be alive when it’s all said and done?
