After the flavorful casting rumor we discussed last week, there's new whispering in the wind as the Latino Review brings us their latest hearsay: Scottish star may return to reprise his role as Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens.
The author of the Latino Review article claims he has three close sources who are working on the project confirming that Master Ben will indeed be back for more teaching in the ways of the Force. After his physical death in A New Hope he is obviously expected to appear in his ethereal ghost form. This idea might bring some continuity problems for the franchise, and require some more re-editing for the original trilogy. Most of you will remember the controversy over ' replacing of Anakin Skywalker's ghost: when Return of the Jedi was released in 1983, the redeemed Jedi-turned-Sith was portrayed in the final scene by . Lucas decided to substitute him in the latest DVD and Blu-Ray versions with , the guy who played Anakin in Episodes II and III. Does this mean Sir will be edited out in future editions, and also replaced by Ewan McGregor? Or will McGregor be made to look older, white-bearded and as similar as possible to Sir Alec? The latter option would be the more consistent one, as one would presume that Force ghosts return with the appearance the particular Jedi had when he died (or in the case of 'revised' Anakin, before he got severely maimed by molten lava in Mustafar and became more machine than man).
As for McGregor's own eagerness to be part of this third trilogy, he said in an interview with Digital Spy when asked if he would be open to don his Jedi robes once more:
I guess, yeah, of course. If they need me, yeah, I'd be happy [to go back].
So, true fans, are you ready for an Ewan McGregor comeback? Is it a nice parallel to the idea of Emperor Palpatine returning (reportedly also as a ghost, not a clone as speculated by many)? Does this make you more excited about Episode VII or less so? Who else might appear as a ghost... Mace Windu? Qui-Gon Jinn? Let us know!
