Now the big mid-season twist of American Horror Story: Roanoke has been revealed, we know that each character has a "real" and a "re-enactment" version.
- Shelby — Re-enactment: Audrey Tindall (Sarah Paulson), Real: Lily Rabe
- Matt — Re-enactment: Dominc Banks (Cuba Gooding Jr.), Real: Andre Holland
- Lee — Re-enactment: Monet Tumusiime (Angela Bassett) Real: Adina Porter
Our main characters' "real" AND "re-enactment" counterparts have been cast already, but some are yet to appear. Let's take a look through the long-serving cast of American Horror Story and speculate as to who we may see taking up these roles in later episodes of Season 6.
Of course, we're all hoping for Jessica Lange to show up, but that idea seems too good to be true. She would rock the hell out of The Butcher.
- Re-enactment: Lady Gaga
- Who could play the "real" version: Lizzie Brocheré / Chloe Sevigny
Lizzie and Chloe both played wide-eyed, borderline insane young women in American Horror Story: Asylum, and they both have just the right fire to bring the bizarre sensuality of The Witch to life. We know that Lady Gaga's part in AHS: Roanoke was limited by her busy schedule, so it seems quite likely that her "real" character will be played by someone else.
- Re-enactment: Agnes Mary Winstead (Kathy Bates)
- Who could play the "real" version: Mare Winningham / Christine Estabrook
Mare Winningham slayed as the deranged mother-figure-gone-wrong in previous seasons of AHS. The incestuous mother Alicia Spencer in Coven and mad Miss Evers in Hotel cemented her reputation as a lady who can play crazy well. It'd also be cool to see Christine Estabrook expand from her small (yet vital) part of Marcy the realtor (Murder House / Hotel) and take on a role as outlandish as The Butcher.
The other option is (maybe) Agnes Mary Winstead / Kathy Bates IS the real Butcher somehow — anything seems to be possible in this mega-meta season.
- Re-enactment: Wes Bentley
- Who could play the "real" version: Finn Wittrock / Dylan McDermott
We haven't seen multi-faceted AHS alums Finn Wittrock and Dylan McDermott yet, and they'd slip into the role of Ambrose with ease. Just slap a Colonial era beard on 'em and you're sorted!
Edward Phillippe Mott
- Re-enactment: Rory Monahan (Evan Peters)
- Who could play the "real" version: Zachary Quinto / Matt Bomer
The powdered, bewigged Edward Mott is the dream role, spitting killer lines in fancy-ass clothes and theatrically dragging out those Ye Olde Vowels. Quinto or Bomer would kill in this role, and I hope that we see Edward Phillippe again. Would Ryan Murphy pull a meta-move and have Finn Wittrock playing his own ancestor? Possibly.
- Re-enactment: Frances Conroy
- Who could play the "real" version: Connie Britton / Patti LuPone
In Episode 6, Sid reminded us that the Polks could still be in play, telling his colleagues, "Nobody's seen the Polks for weeks, we've looked." All of the Polks would need recasting, but it's sledgehammer-wielding matriarch Momma Polk who requires the most lunatic gravitas. It'd be great to have Connie Britton back on the squad, or see Patti LuPone expand on her memorable performance as a religious nutjob in American Horror Story: Coven.

Obviously, we may see new actors take up these roles: Andre Holland is a totally new addition to this season, and many cast favorites only joined the show later in its development. Maybe these roles won't be filled at all? Perhaps characters such as Elias and Cricket who, though we saw die in the re-enactment portion of My Roanoke Nightmare, may return in some undead guise.
