For a decade, the #MCU has been building up to the climatic Avengers: Infinity War story, now set to be released in 2018. One cameo appearance after another, the presence of the Mad Titan Thanos has built suspense and curiosity about the greatest of all #Marvel battles.
With the recent release of set photos, we can barely contain ourselves. A few of the photos from the set being filmed in Scotland show stuntmen wearing mocap outfits and holding unique weapons. One of the stuntmen is sporting a pretty cool pike that resembles a weapon that is oddly familiar to serious fans of Marvel Comics.
For every chief villain, there is a right-hand henchman standing nearby ready to do his bidding. Seeing that pike, could we see Corvus Glaive, a lieutenant to Thanos, wielding his otherwordly blade? If this is a subtle pointer to Glaive being in Avengers: Infinity War, are the other stuntmen playing the rest of The Black Order, the alien task force assembled by Thanos?
Hints Point To Corvus Glaive
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter about Kong: Skull Island, performer Terry Notary revealed he was working on the set of Avengers: Infinity War:
"I’m working with Josh Brolin and three other actors [in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War], and I’m playing Josh Brolin’s right-hand bad guy in the film. I can’t say the name of the character or I think Marvel will sever my head, but I apply those same principals of what it means to drop bullshit and just play a character truly evil. And it’s working. [Laughs] It’s truly working."
What we can glean from this part of the interview is two things:
- The right-hand bad guy is possibly Corvus Glaive
- The three other actors may be part of The Black Order, which has also been called The Cull Obsidian
Thanos is a powerful being in the Marvel Universe, but having a posse of bad guys will only make him stronger. The Black Order is an impressive group to battle the likes of the Avengers and the Guardians of The Galaxy.
Now check out two photos of the mocap stuntmen looking ominous as they hold evil-looking weapons. Look out, Captain America and Iron Man! You may have your work cut out for you.
Who Is Corvus Glaive?
Let's go on the assumption these photos do point to Corvus Glaive appearing in Avengers: Infinity War. Then it makes sense to talk about who he is in the comics.
Glaive first appeared in Infinity #1, created by Jonathan Hickman. #CorvusGlaive, with his black cloak and curved blade, closely resembles the figure of Death portrayed in various movies. To become Thanos's favorite henchman, Corvus Glaive betrayed his own people to just to appease The Mad Titan, and in turn was named as a general for Thanos.
Corvus Glaive is like a high-powered thug as part of Thanos's crew. One of his jobs was to squeeze tribute out of planets harassed by Thanos. If they didn't do his bidding, well, let's just say they received a cosmic beat-down. Glaive's main role was leader of that group The Black Order.
Corvus Glaive's Powers
What makes Corvus Glaive the most imposing henchman for Thanso? A lot of his powers are are what we commonly see in the Marvel Universe:
- Superhuman Strength
- Superhuman Speed
- Superhuman Durability
- Superhuman Endurance
- Mastery of tactics and strategy
He sounds like your typical bad guy that can go toe-to-toe with the likes of The Hulk, Captain America, or even Drax. We can only imagine what kind of fight scenes we're going to get if he does appear in Infinity War. And watching him flail his glaive around will be a pretty cool scene to watch on screen.
What About His Weapon?
What really sets Corvus Glaive apart from the rest of The Black Order is his glaive. It has the ability to split atoms! This means can cut through almost anything: Hulk's green hide and Hyperion's thick skin. Can it cut through #CaptainAmerica's shield? The glaive even gives Corvus Glaive the power of immortality. Of course there is one caveat: it only works if it is near him or it is not broken in pieces. Hopefully, one of the #Avengers or members of the Guardians of the Galaxy will figure out to defeat this guy.

Who is The Black Order?
What is leader without a group to command? The Black Order (a name chosen to be more approachable than "Cull Obsidian") is a band of lethal aliens selected by Thanos to wreak havoc on other worlds and extort tribute. Four other villains join Glaive in the Black Order: The Ebony Maw, Black Dwarf, Supergiant, and Proxima Midnight. Will we get to see one of these foes in Avengers: Infinity War? Here is a breakdown of what each member can do.
- The Ebony Maw: His talents are deception and manipulation. He once convinced Doctor Strange to summon the otherwordly demon, Shuma-Gorath.
- Black Dwarf: The powerhouse of the group, with super strength and superhuman density.
- Supergiant: She uses mind control and psychic possession. She easily defeated the Jean Grey School and easily dispatched the #XMen.
- Proxima Midnight: A master combatant with super speed, strength, and endurance. She also wields a spear forged by Thanos. It once immobilized the Hulk, and made him revert back to Bruce Banner. Also, she is Corvus Glaive's wife.
Will Corvus Glaive Appear in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2'?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters in May, and it could offer the first real glimpse of Corvus Glaive, and maybe some of the The Black Order. Since Thanos has made appearances in The Avengers, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Guardians of the Galaxy, it would pretty cool to see Thanos set up Corvus Glaive and The Black Order during the end credit scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Imagine Thanos standing front and center with his nefarious goons at his side, waiting for the day they get to take on the heroes of the Marvel universe. That would be an impressive sight!
