If you didn't see Empire's cover featuring the freakishly delightful future Sentinel, check it out here:
One of the biggest letdowns in comic movie history was when Sentinels, the mutant-hunting droids that are simultaneously badass and terrifying, were teased to appear in X3 and then just didn't. And no, the Danger Room sequence doesn't count. Luckily for us, is here to save the day with sentinels from the past and more importantly, the future, with X-Men: Days Of Future Past.
From what we can see here, this Sentinel is giving the T-800 a run for his money. But what are those metallic plates? Is this really NIMROD? Enquiring minds want to know. Production designer John Myre gave this explanation about the future Sentinel's design:
"They're biomechanical weapons. We had to come up with what would be the ultimate version that could actually, in principle, stop the X-Men. We started with this idea that they were almost made up of magnetic plates slapped over one another, imagining that the plates could contract or grow, so the Sentinel can be skinny to get through a small space or the plates can open up to become a bigger shape. So they have become virtually unstoppable."
