's departure from The Walking Dead continues to create debate and now we might have discovered the reason for the showrunner's premature exit. A source at The Hollywood Reporter is now claiming that Mazzara's shortcomings in running the series during the third season became "abundantly clear … especially for the second half of the season" and that production on the show was shut down "several times" because of a lack of material.
Wow. If that's true, then you can see why Mazzara was shown the door. A showrunner's job is to keep production running on schedule, so not having enough material to work with is a pretty big oversight on his part.
On the flip side, Season 3 has arguably been the best season yet, so it will be interesting to see what effect his departure will have on the show.
In my opinion, as long as there are lots of zombies eating lots of people and Daryl keeps on kicking ass, The Walking Dead will continue to be a massive success.
The Walking Dead returns February 10, 9/8c on AMC.
