(WARNING: This article contains significant spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2)
Out of all of the characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it can be argued that Rocket Raccoon was the most entertaining of the characters. In fact, his storyline took up a major chunk of the plot of the movie.
That being said, it's about time that everyone's favorite gunslinging raccoon was to get his own solo movie in the #MCU. As popular as he is, it seems only inevitable that #Marvel greenlights a solo movie for Rocket. However, if you are not a hundred percent convinced as to why it should or should not happen, here are four reasons that should convince you otherwise.
4. Depth Of Character
Rocket is not just a part of the comedic relief in the movie. In fact, he has probably the most depth to his character out of everyone in his group. Surprisingly, his character has been explored the least out of the whole team.
While both movies have dealt with Drax overcoming revenge, Gamora and Nebula going from enemies to sisters, and Star-Lord solving the mystery of his father, we have yet to come to receive any closure for Rocket's character. If he were to have a movie all to himself, then maybe he would finally be able to reveal the character depth we know is in there, but just hasn't been explored yet. 3. Comedic Presence
There's no doubt that every member of the Guardians brings a level of humor to the table with them. However, there is something about Rocket's humor that seems to outshine the rest of them. Most likely the reason is the fact that he is a bit edgier than the rest of the group, throwing off more naughty words than you'd expect from a Disney movie.
Case in point, in Vol. 2, the moment when Rocket is tied up and making fun of Taserface was absolutely brilliant:
"I am so sorry. I just keep imagining you waking up in the morning, start looking in the mirror and all seriously say to yourself: 'You know what would be a really kick-ass name, Taserface!' What was your first choice, Scrotumhead?"
It was the exact kind of humor that is to be expected from the character. With Marvel already being familiar with comedic superhero movies such as the first Guardians and Ant-Man, a solo movie for Rocket with the exact same kind of humor would absolutely work.
3. His Backstory
Not much is known about Rocket's past in the MCU. We know that he was experimented on, but not much else is known. Marvel giving Rocket his own movie that explains those experiments would not only give him some closure (as mentioned above), but some answers to the audience that may not be as familiar with his backstory.
It is obvious from how his character has been portrayed in the past two movies that Rocket has a deep past. It is also obvious that he is trying to run away from it as well. As we have seen with other Marvel characters, you can't run away from your past — eventually everything comes back to haunt you. If Marvel were to do this, it would most likely happen in Guardians 3. If it were to happen in a solo Rocket Raccoon movie, then it would have a much bigger impact on his character.
2. The Buddy Cop Dynamic With Groot
Out of all of the reasons, this one seems the most likely as to why the movie would happen. Rocket and Groot are one of the most iconic duos in the MCU right now. Whether Groot is a baby or completely grown, the two work together perfectly.
That being said, a buddy cop-styled movie featuring both Rocket and #Groot would not only end up being one of the funniest movies in the MCU, but potentially even one of the most successful movies. If there is one thing that sells, it is Groot. If you look at any promotion for Vol. 2, very few exclude Baby Groot. That is because Groot is one of the main selling points of the movie. If you were to have a movie solely based off of Rocket and Groot, Marvel would practically be printing money.
1. The Time Is Now
As seen by the success of both Guardians of the Galaxy movies, all of the characters are capable of pulling off a movie together. But if there is someone who deserves a solo movie more than anyone else, it is #RocketRaccoon. He has enough depth to build a solo movie as well as plenty of comedic relief. His backstory would be a great focus for the plot of the movie. Adding Groot in a buddy cop-style movie would be the best for business.
There are still several untitled movies that the MCU has planned down the road. Whether or not Marvel were to give Rocket one of those movies is unknown, but knowing Marvel, they have been known for taking their success and building off of it. I wouldn't count it out quite yet.
If you really wanted to put icing on the cake, you could bring in Guardians director James Gunn for the project. And just like that, you have another MARVEL-ous success of a movie!
So what do you think? Do you want to see a Rocket Raccoon movie? Would you want it to be directed by James Gunn? Which other Guardian deserves their own movie? Let me know your thoughts down below!
