James Corden's Carpool Karaoke segment may have launched on The Late Late Show with James Corden a mere 2 years ago, but the phenomenon has million of views on Youtube. Adele's segment alone stacks up an unbelievable 165,099,543 views, and the show even featured former First Lady Michelle Obama. Because of this success, it wasn't surprising to hear that Apple Music has now produced an entire series around the concept, bringing the experience to a whole new level.
Apple Music's Carpool Karaoke: The Series premiered on August 8th with Will Smith as the show's first guest. Although the show is available only to Apple Music subscribers, you can still watch the first six minutes of the series on The Late Late Show's Youtube account, where fans can get a little taste of what the new show is all about.
Will Smith Gets Jiggy With James Corden
The first episode opens up with the camera briefly scanning through traffic before revealing Smith and Corden singing Will Smith's 'Get Jiggy With It'. Things look as though they'll continue in a similar manner to Corden's usual segment, until the host busts Will's groove by bringing in a marching band - reminding us that this is not our usual Carpool Karaoke.
Things really go to the next level once the duo climb into a helicopter and start signing R. Kelly's 'I Believe I can Fly'. The expedition is followed by explosions, drinks at the bar, role-playing shenanigans and a whole lot more.
The clip proves that the show plans to offer something more than just celebrities cruising the highways with their favorite song on the radio. In fact, it's clear to see that, following their acquisition of the popular segment, Apple are looking to ensure the show is bigger, louder and funnier than ever before.
Apple Music Is Going All-Out On A-Listers And Special Effects!
Apple Music's take on Corden's #Carpoolkaraoke will be a little different, particularly as A-listers will also go behind the wheels themselves. The trailer for the show does a great job preparing us for the fun-filled series, showing us footage of star-packed future episodes.
In fact, Apple has taken the line-up seriously, hunting down huge names to take on the musical challenge. As things stand, the current line-up includes:
- Episode 1: James Corden and Will Smith
- Episode 2: John Legend and Alicia Keys
- Episode 3: Seth MacFarlane and Ariana Grande
- Episode 4: Jeff Gordon and Michael Strahan
- Episode 5: Billy Eichner and Metallica
- Episode 6: Chelsea Handler and Blake Shelton
- Episode 7: Shaquille O'Neal and John Cena
However, that's not everyone involved. The trailer clearly features Miley Cyrus and her family, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, Will.I.Am, Lebron James, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, Tracee Ellis Ross with Big Sean and many more. The show will even pair up unlikely #celebrity names to allow fans to get to know them a little better.
Discussing the process behind pairing Metallica with Billy Eichner, Eric Pankowski (who serves as showrunner) told Variety,
"They both were very interested in doing the show. We reached out to both because we were fans of both. And we thought combining those two together, you get an “opposites attract” thing. Our goal was to have these two pieces of talent who do not know each other, they meet that day, and by the end of the road trip, they’re hugging each other. Watching that dynamic play out was really fun…"
If Will Smith's session is anything to go by, the show looks like a fun-filled take on our favorite Late Late Show segment, giving us more intimate screen time with our favorite #celebs.
