The live-action remake of Disney's Aladdin has sure attracted a lot of attention since it was announced last year. While previous remakes such as The Jungle Book, Beauty & The Beast and Cinderella were massive hits for the studio, many fans have been skeptical about Aladdin, directing most of their issues towards whether the film's lead roles would be whitewashed and who would replace Robin Williams as the Genie.
So far, the answers to all of these questions have been well received. Mena Massoud will be playing Aladdin, Naomi Scott will be playing Jasmin, and Marwan Kenzari will be portraying the evil Jafar. Former Saturday Night Live star Nasim Pedrad will be playing Mara, a handmaiden and friend of Princess Jasmine. (However, controversy was raised recently with the casting of Billy Magnussen, who is joining as Prince Anders, a character who was not seen in the films previous outing.)
And now Will Smith, who will be voicing the Genie, has shared a photo of the cast on set. This is the first look we've had of the team all together as one, and it shows that production has indeed begun on the new film. Check it out below:
Smith described himself as "getting his genie on!" which will hopefully be up to scratch with the comic timing and presentation that Robin Williams provided in the previous Disney adaptation. The film is set for a 2019 release date, along with the studio's remakes of Mulan, The Lion King and Dumbo. Other planned remakes include Peter Pan, The Sword in the Stone, Pinocchio, Snow White and The Little Mermaid.
Hopefully for fans who are still skeptical of the new Aladdin, this first cast photo puts their minds at ease — because it'll take a lot of magic to live up to the old gang.
