Studio Ghibli announced last week at the Venice Film Festival that , 72, was retiring after The Wind Rises.

"For me, he is simply the greatest animator that ever was." said Wild Bunch co-founder Vincent Maraval, who is a longtime collaborator of Miyazaki’s and is managing world sales for The Wind Rises. Maraval pronounced Miyazaki’s retirement "the end of an era." Knowing there will be no more "Ponyo or Catbus or monsters or witches or resourceful little girls, is very strange," Maraval said "At the same time, he is ending on a masterpiece that leaves us with his great humanism and a vision of our century to contemplate."

To mark Miyzaki's retirement, The Wall Street Journal has compiled a slideshow of striking images from Miyazaki's career as a master filmmaker. A few of these are reproduced below.

The Wind Rises (2013) Ponyo (2008) The Oscar-nominated Howl's Moving Castle (2004) Spirited Away (2001) Princess Mononoke (1997) Porco Rosso (1992) Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) My Neighbor Totoro (1988) Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
