Fans of the -starring Showtime production The Borgias who expected the series to run a solid 4 seasons like its predecessor, The Tudors, will be in for a bit of a disappointment as rumors are circling that the third season will be its last.

Creator sparked these rumors himself with his comments at a recent launch campaign for Season 3:

I would like to finish it with a two-hour movie. Another 10 episodes is kind of exhausting. I've mapped out a movie, which, if (Showtime brass) agree, will shoot in June with the same cast, and finally the Pope will die horribly.

The two-hour movie compromise would align with Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins' audience-first philosophy of giving series their proper endings. As he said back in January, "It’s really important to me that our audience feels taken care of."

Granted, all of this might change and a fourth season greenlit, depending on ratings. But for now, it appears as if Showtime execs are leaning toward finishing out the story with a two-hour movie.
