In The Flash, ever since Barry Allen tossed the Philosopher's Stone into the Speed Force, fans have wondered how Savitar would return. Having been set up as the Big Bad for Season 4, surely he wouldn't have been taken out by the time the midseason finale rolled around. Perhaps the most recent two-part episode, "Attack on Gorilla City" and "Attack on Central City," can give us some clues.
Can't wait for Tuesday? Here's a teaser!
In the last episode, #Flash and the gang headed to Earth-2 in an effort to save Harrison Wells from Grodd. After battling #Solivar, Grodd reveals that Barry has played right into his hands. By defeating Solivar, Grodd was able to depose him and take control of the apes. His first act as monarch would be to attack Earth-1 and take over Central City in retaliation for Barry and his crew banishing him to Earth-2. Pretty petty, Grodd.
The gang manage to get back home without Grodd, thinking they have averted the oncoming ape crisis. Grodd, however, has other plans. Being a gorilla who "always thinks ahead," he has Gypsy under his control and will use her to access Earth-1. Among the many questions this raises — such as how does #Grodd know Gypsy exists? And how did he get her under his control? — what will team Flash do when they are overrun with apes? Well, the short answer is, they're going to free Savitar. And here's why.
Savitar Is An Unknown
Grodd has displayed an excellent fortitude when it comes to strategy. using an elaborate plan to get Barry as well as Cisquo to Earth-2 to was nothing short of genius. And to throw Gypsy and the upcoming Accelerated Man into the mix is truly a master stroke. Barry is going to need a bunch of help on this one and he has proven to fight gorillas one on one. However, an entire army of them will be more challenging. Even with the help of the rest of the #Arrowverse, he's going to need an ace in the hole that's likely to come in the form of Savitar.
He Has To Get Out Somehow
Ever since the midseason finale, the main goal has been to prevent Savitar from killing Iris. Has it never occurred to them to just keep him in the Speed Force? Everything team Flash has done to prevent the death has changed nothing. Certainly H.R. pops up after Kid Flash arrested Plunder instead of Barry. But this is fake Wells we're talking about. He could be aiming for Iris, for all we know. Or it could be Harrison. He is known more for gun-toting than H.R. is. Regardless, the restaurant was still demolished and as we will see in the upcoming episode, there will be an attack on Central City via gorillas.
Barry Might Not Be The One To Free Him
Of course, with Savitar being in the Speed Force, logically Barry (or another speedster) would have to get him out. This could be where the Accelerated Man comes in. With virtually no comic history, it's difficult to tell where his allegiances lie. He may see Iris as a sacrifice for the greater good or could be one of Savitar's disciples. Being so fast and able to access different worlds, why should his cult be limited to Earth-1? For that matter, Julian could free him. There is a prophecy about one of them betraying the team. His only connection to the team is Caitlin and, seeing as she's going to become Killer Frost at some point, he may not have much reason to stay loyal.
On-Set Pics Spoil Everything
There were a few set pics floating around awhile back featuring Grodd and Savitar in the same location. Granted, if you look at the photos, this isn't specifically what's going on; there aren't too many characters in the current season that require that amount of CG work. Unless Parasite or King Shark is making a surprise guest appearance — both of which would be all kinds of awesome — Savitar will make his triumphant return in the upcoming episode.
The producers have certainly upped the ante since the midseason finale and an attack by an army of gorillas is certainly something that the Flash would have trouble with on a good day, let alone when he's dealing with trying to save the love of his life. Barry will do anything to defend Iris and that includes shaking hands with the devil or, in this case, god of motion. Some prices are just too high, I’m afraid. I would simply begin to welcome our new gorilla overlords. Can't be any worse than what we have now.
The Flash Season 3, Episode 4, "Attack on Central City" airs Tuesday night on The CW at 8 p.m. How do you think team Flash will defeat Grodd? Sound off in the comments below!
