As an unfashionable, bespectacled male who once got to Level 80 on World of Warcraft, people are always telling me, "Oh man, you need to watch Firefly. You'll love it!" Firefly certainly does have some serious geek credentials; it's set in space, it got cancelled long before most people wanted to see it go, and perhaps most of all, it spawned from the creative mind of uber-geek .
Luckily for my friends, and countless other fans, Firefly just might be making a return. Well, at the very least Whedon hasn't completely forgotten about it. He told the Toronto Sun:
It's something I would love to do. Part of me is like, 'God, it would be great when I finish Avengers 2 to do that'
He certainly appreciates it had a small but dedicated fan-base:
When I made Serenity, I said here's one thing I'll never do again - a movie based on something that some people know about and some people don't, with tons of characters who all know each other and who you have to introduce. And then my second movie was The Avengers.
Now Whedon has established himself as a massive money-and-movie-making machine, he just might have the influence to reboot Firefly. It certainly sounds like he has unfinished business when he says:
I'll never really accept [the cancellation]. And I always, in the back of my head, think 'What if I could get the old gang back together?'"
Unfortunately, even if Firefly is on Whedon's to-do list, that doesn't mean we'll see it anytime soon. The Avengers: Age Of Ultron is due out in 2015, while Whedon has also committed to bringing the Avengers TV series, S.H.I.E.L.D. to ABC. He's a pretty busy guy now, and it looks like after all this hard work he might just want to take it easy:
I suspect very strongly that after Avengers 2 the next thing I do will be a one-man show. Possibly one monkey.
