By now, most comic fans have had the pleasure of seeing the new trailer, and the internet is ablaze with positive reactions not just about the movie, but about how amazing X-23 looks in it. For those of you who haven’t had a chance, take a few moments to make your day better by watching it below:

Now that you’ve had a chance to familiarize yourself, we really need to talk about that vicious little ninja girl, a.k.a. X-23. For those of you unfamiliar with the character, she was originally a clone of Wolverine, which I suppose makes her “the best at what she does.” Like she has a healing factor, adamantium-laced skeleton and three very sharp claws (unlike Wolverine, two are in her hands and one is in her foot). Originally a vicious assassin, she was found by Wolverine and became a sort of daughter figure to him, eventually joining the and working with Wolverine as a member of X-Force.

Here’s My Theory

Now, it’s pretty obvious from the trailer that Logan takes place far in the future from what we’ve seen in the X-Men movie timelines. This means that X-23 really can’t team up with the likes of Cyclops and all the other X-Men. My theory is that by the end of the film, Logan will have no choice but to send X-23 back to the past in order to protect her from the man hunting her. Of course, Wolverine would normally have no problem taking them all out, but this is an old and broken Wolverine — one who might not be as strong as he once was.

So, his last stand could involve him protecting his daughter figure by sending her where he knows she will be safe — back to the one man he truly trusts: the he knew in the past. After all, X-23 is a hell of a character; it would be a waste to leave her stranded in the future and unable to appear in future X-Men films alongside the new cast.

I know what you’re thinking: "Why would he do that?” Well, for one thing, seems pretty adamant that he’s done playing Wolverine. So, that leaves Fox with two options — either replace him with an actor that can hopefully fill his shoes, or give fans a new character they can all root for. Now, in the comics, the current Logan has died, been replaced by X-23 sporting his classic yellow and blue look. It would make sense for to retire the character for a short period of time and give this female version a chance to grow over the next few films and learn to be a hero like her “father.”

The only real question is how she would get to the past. Now, the X-Men franchise is no stranger to time traveling, whether it be through mutant powers or technology. Either one could potentially work for Logan and create a jumping-off point for Hugh Jackman and a worthy successor in the young Dafne Keen, who could potentially play the part for the next several years.

So, what do you think? Could X-23 be sent back to McAvoy era X-Men as a character whose animal instincts must be tamed and molded to create a fierce new hero? Or, do you think it’s going to be a one and done with the character?
