Academy Award winner William Hurt (Kiss of the Spider Woman) will play Gregg Allman in the upcoming biopic about the hard-living blues singer.

Midnight Rider: The Gregg Allmand Story will show both, the present day, sober version of the musician and his younger, hell-raising self.

The latter will be played by All-American Rejects singer/songwriter Tyson Ritter.

Randall Miller (CBGB) directs, while (22 Jump Street) co-stars as Duane Allman, the late brother of Gregg.

Midnight Rider will be based on Allmand’s 2011 memoir My Cross to Bear.

While I am not too keen on another tortured-musician biopic, is a powerhouse actor, underused nowadays. He deserves more leading roles in good movies.

Here’s hoping Midnight Rider will belong to that exclusive club.

Filming of the biopic is set to begin February, with a Oscar bait-y fall/winter 2014 release entirely possible.
