It's amazing how quickly things can change in Hollywood. This latest turn of events came about so swiftly as to snap one's neck. Ever since the success of the Evil Dead remake, all we've been hearing about is how the sequel has been fast-tracked even in light of the rumors that the original franchise was set to continue as well. In fact, just the other day, remake director seemed to let slip a confirmation that would return to direct Army of Darkness 2. So it seemed Fede was very much still involved with the whole process. Everything seemed to be moving in the right direction...and then today happened.
Speaking with Gorosito.TV, Alvarez dropped this bombshell...
"Look, I am sorry to tell you this but that movie won’t happen. Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved. We left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things. I don’t know if the producers still have intentions of making it. But what I can tell you is that we are not part of that project."
What what what?! While this is certainly sudden and unfortunate news, as I do believe Alvarez did a phenomenal job in spite of his unenviable task to remake a true horror classic, I do not believe Evil Dead 2 has been in any way derailed. When I interviewed the cast of Evil Dead during SxSW, at least one actor informed me that she had already been approached to return for the sequel. And after the financial success of the remake, it's difficult to believe the studio would allow a sequel to die on the vine simply due to a director's exit.
What do you guys think?
