Matt Smith may have made his last bow as the Eleventh Doctor on the beloved, bonkers Doctor Who last Christmas as his version of the Doctor regenerated into 's Twelfth Doctor, but Whovians, as they always do after a regeneration, are having a rather hard time letting go of one of the most popular actors to ever step into the role of the space-hopping, pathos-emitting Time Lord.

But hark, for I bring you tidings of great joy, oh emotional fanbase, for there have been reports that Smith is in talks to reprise his role in the next series this fall - at least for a brief appearance. Apparently, showrunner Steven Moffat wants Matt to officially sign off as the Time Lord and pass the torch to Twelve. According to the reports

Doctor Who’s sidekick Clara, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, is struggling to accept that Capaldi is still her Doctor when she receives a phone call from Matt, which he made prior to his regeneration.

It sounds confusing but he is ringing the future from the past and wants to assure Clara this new man is still Doctor Who.

As some savvy fans have pointed out, there was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene in 'The Time of the Doctor', where Clara places the handset back into the cradle on the TARDIS, as the phone had been off the hook. Who had the Doctor been talking to? Apparently, now we know - it was Clara. Fans reported a scene being filmed in Cardiff where Clara received a call from a public phone, and Peter Capaldi was heard asking, "Is that the Doctor?"

Fezzes: Still not cool.

Now, all of this is fantastic and is very Moffat-y. But I have two questions: One, does this mean we'll not see Matt Smith, only hear him? If that's the case, it would be a nice, neat touch, but really not that big a surprise. Two, if he is to physically reprise his role because Moffatt wants him to finally sign off, as the reports say, why? Wasn't that what the Christmas special was for? Or did Moffatt not consider the hour-long episode to be a fitting exit? Why not?

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens this fall, unless some eagle-eyed fans on the streets of Cardiff spot Matt Smith sporting his tweed jacket and bow tie in the coming months.

Do you think Matt Smith needs another send-off, or was 'The Time of the Doctor' a good end? Sound of in the comments.
