You can call James Cameron a lot of things, but there's definitely one thing you can never accuse him of: minimalism.
That's probably why he's confirmed THREE Avatar sequels off the back of the original movie. This isn't new news, but today (who is down to appear in all three sequels) has talked a bit about the upcoming movies. In an interview with MTV, Saldana explained the emotions behind the upcoming trilogy. She stated:
I went down to the studio that they’ve been setting up for the past three years. It was wonderful. Jim took us and gave us a tour of all the reference pictures, telling us the stories. I haven’t been able to read the scripts. They’re still working on them. We kind of get choked up. [Cameron] gets emotional telling us about the story. I get emotional hearing about it, so I’m looking forward to it.
It seems will be directing all three Avatar movies at the same time, which seems about right for a guy who likes a challenge. Of course, Avatar was the highest grossing movie of all time, so it's not surprising that sequels are being commissioned, but it does make one wonder if dumping them all on us without even time to breath is such a good idea?
No one outside of the production is quite sure what the story of the upcoming Avatar sequels will be, although it's believed they will further explore the planet of Pandora. Giant Freakin Robot is claiming Avatar 2 will mostly be based on the oceans, while Avatar 3 will take to the stars and moons around Pandora. James Cameron has also hinted that Avatar 4 could be a prequel set in Pandora before the humans arrive.
You can expect the first Avatar sequel to land in 2016, with a new film arriving each year until 2018.
