Since it's theatrical trailer release last July 2013, Ben Stiller's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has sparked a lot of interest (it kinda looks like an ad for a new Canon product or something).
His last project as actor-director was Tropic Thunder, and the tone of his new film is something completely different from his last one (thank god!). But what's interesting is the history behind this project which dates its conception to 1994. Among almost a decade's worth of lawsuits and film rights, there was a tug of war as to who would play Walter Mitty himself.
And here are the prospective Mitty's! Each candidate being a highly revered comedian that has performed in a role that proved they can be more than just comedians.
PS. If I were the casting director, Robin Williams and Will Ferrel would have been first on my list. Just saying.
After his performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show, how could they not consider this guy? Sure he gets a little over the top at times, but he was one of the earlier contenders during the 90s. Too bad he's a little too old to play the role now.
Provided that he isn't an actor I particularly look out for, we all know his more independent history making wonder-bread-budget movies with his brother, Luke, and their buddy Wes Anderson. Plus, he was pretty good in Midnight in Paris.
Sacha Baron Cohen
Yes, this guy. Note that he was offered the role in 2010, the year after Bruno presented itself to the world. But! He was pretty cool as the station inspector in Hugo and not to mention he has impressive singing skills evident in his role as Thenardier in last year's Les Miserables.
There you have it, the could-have-been Mitty's. Another could have been is the director, which was Steven Spielberg, but he dropped the project in 2006 for War of the Worlds and Munich.
Although I'm not a huge fan of Ben Stiller movies, his debut film Reality Bites will forever be in my top 10 list, so I'm very excited to see if he can pull off that kind of magic again. What better Christmas gift could he possibly give the world?
Save the date: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty premieres on December 25, 2013!
