Filming has begun on Stephen Sondheim's classic musical Into the Woods. The film is set for a December 25th 2015 release date and will be directed by Rob Marshall (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides). It will star Meryl Streep as the Witch, Johnny Depp as the Wolf, Chris Pine as Cinderella's Prince, and Tracey Ullman as Jack's Mother. This is the second Sondheim musical that is to be adapted into a film since Tim Burton's 2007 adaptation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street which won the Golden Globe awards for Best Picture of 2007 and Johnny Depp was titled Best Actor.

The film is set to be based on the musical telling the story of a witch who decides to teach lessons to various fairy-tale characters. Now there is one question that gets me: Will this musical film adaptation be more successful than other musical film adaptations from the past few years? Now for those of you who do not know, we have had several successful musical adaptations released in movie theaters over the past 30 years or more such as Annie (1982), Grease (1978), Sweeney Todd (2007), Mamma Mia (2007) and the most recent Les Miserables (2012). And I am a die-hard musical movie fan. Though for some of these, I haven't seen the original play. But the movie adaptations of these respective musicals were awesome.

So what is your favorite musical movie adaptation? Will Into the Woods beat these other musicals? As always, let me know in the comments below.
