Greg Silverman, Warner Bros.’ president of creative development and worldwide production, addressed the rumors about Wonder Woman being in Batman vs. Superman. That is to say he gave a vague answer to a direct question most likely to get everyone's mind off of Affleck being the new caped crusader and his latest film "Runner, Runner" being a bomb and Affleck getting some bad reviews for his acting. So from his answer:
“Wonder Woman is an amazing character. I think it’s a great opportunity both for box office success, but also to have an amazingly powerful female superhero.”
I have to believe yes- Wonder Woman is going to be in this movie because we don't believe a stand alone movie with her would make any money and we have to try to create some positive buzz about this flick. After all this is show-BUSINESS folks! Although I'm sure he was using his best honest John used car salesman voice when he was asked-
“Is she going to have her own separate movie or is she going to be a part of this?”
and then dodged the question by saying:
“We are taking it all very seriously and are trying to do a plan that’s respectful to those characters and maximizes the stories as best they can, So everything that has been speculated are things that we’ve thought about.”
What executives like him speculate about is how to make money and I can't blame them that is their job after all but as he said they "speculate" they take risks, they hedge their bets, and they really don't give a furry rat's butt what people like me think. Because I think making a multi-picture deal with a mediocre actor who happens to be a pretty good director. Who is willing to direct the Justice league movie, and based on the fact that Batman is the only DC character that's ever made them any real money is as bad a decision as letting Joel Schumaker take over the first Batman franchise. But hey they got a package deal, let Affleck be the Bat and we can let him direct The Justice league movie it will be cheaper than giving Snyder a raise if his sequel is a hit.
Even though Silverman says things like:
“They’ve crafted a great story, I mean, this is where it all comes from for us. It’s just a great story that involves these amazing characters"
He's a salesman, this movie is his poduct. Think about it, saying nothing while talking is a great way to start rumors. The only thing he really knows about this movie besides what a great deal they got with Affleck is:
“they both will be wearing suits, there are capes involved, there will be action, there will be excitement”
What really got me though was when he was asked what he thought about the uproar about the caped crusaders casting he replied:
“We knew going in that we had more information than the general public had,We knew what the take of the movie was, we knew what the character was going to be. We don’t take these decisions lightly. We thought about everybody — brand new people, established people. Ben is the perfect guy to play this role.”
In my opinion (albeit a cynical, crusty, old white guy's) it was just a cost effective choice, as will be shoving Wonder Woman into this movie as opposed to giving her a stand alone project. Superman made a little money and had some mixed reviews. It opened well and was a lot better than the last attempt but it never made batman type profits. So they're thinking this will take that Box office up a notch and give them a shortcut to The Justice League.
I could be wrong ( and part of me hopes I am) but I don't think this is going to work. It's more choices based on money than creativity. But hey they know more than the general public does which is why we're all eagerly awaiting that Green Lantern sequel they're doing, oh wait that's not happening because they lost so much money on it? hmmm
