Disney will release the new Star Wars film on December 18, 2015.

"We're very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture"

says Alan Horn.

The science fiction sequel will begin shooting in Spring 2014 in the U.K.

Rumor had it that the production was troubled, and that it desperately needed a 2016 release. These rumors have now been laid to rest, according to Disney.

This does in fact confirm the rumor it will open in the Christmas season. Except a big but not giant opening at the box office, where it should hold nicely with fans and families.
