Why do we love masks so much? Is it because they allow us to hide our identity and be someone else? Is it because they allow us to conceal our true self? Or is it due to the appeal of the masked characters in the films we watch and the novels we read?
No matter the movie genre, masked heroes and villains are everywhere nowadays! Superhero films, sci-fi, horror flicks... Hell, we've seen them even in westerns! And while there's a mystery surrounding each and every one of these characters, some of them are greater than the rest. Today, I created a small countdown with the most iconic masks in movie history, the masks which manage to blow us away thanks to their creative designs and the purpose they serve!
10. DEATH EATER MASKS (HARRY POTTER FILM SERIES, 2001-2011)
In the Harry Potter universe, the Death Eaters are some of the most notorious dark wizards of all time. Serving as Voldemort's right-hand men, every member of this villainous elit had its own terrifying mask in order to hide their secret identities and avoid arrest for their various crimes against the wizarding world.
9. LEATHERFACE MASK (TEXAS CHAINSAW FILM SERIES, 1974-...)
Leatherface is one of the most prominent slasher movie villains of all time. Being a cold-hearted, simple-minded, unstable serial killer and cannibal, Leatherface used the flesh of his victims to make chili and their bones to build the inside of his house along with his family. Through the years, we've seen him wear various masks, all made from human skin.
8. MASK OF LOKI (THE MASK, 1994)
A wooden mask discovered by nervous bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss in an Edge City harbor. The Mask of Loki is the most powerful one on our list, having the ability to turn its user into a green-faced ADHD-sufferer who'll leave your head spinning. The Mask is my favorite Jim Carrey comedy and the Mask of Loki surely deserves the 8th place!
7. THE MASK OF ZORRO (VARIOUS ADAPTATIONS)
I think it'd be fair to call Zorro a ''veteran'' superhero! After all, the character's adventures inspired the creation of many other fictional crime fighters, such as Batman. While his mask may seem kind of simplistic, it clearly is perfect for the character of Zorro and for what he represents, bringing back the memories of simpler and more romantic times!
6. GHOSTFACE'S MASK (SCREAM FILM SERIES, 1996-2011)
This mask is worn by the primary antagonists of the Scream film series, the Ghostface murderers. Despite the fact that we've seen many different versions of the original mask in the franchise, one thing's for sure: all of the Scream masks are very iconic and extremely terrifying at the same time!
5. HANNIBAL'S MASK (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS,1991)
Hannibal Lecter is by far the most dangerous and charismatic madman I've seen on screen. Although he probably enjoyed most of his stay in the asylum, spending time manipulating Will Graham and chatting with Clarice Starling, I bet he didn't like wearing his trademark mask since the guards of the institute made him wear it to keep him in check.
4. GUY FAWKES MASK (V FOR VENDETTA, 2005)
No one can really deny that Alan Moore is a comic book legend! His run on Swamp Thing was exceptional; Watchmen is one of the most important comics of all time. However, my all-time personal favorite is V for Vendetta, the dark tale of V, the charming rebellious freedom fighter wearing a Guy Fawkes mask. Unlike some other comic book adaptations, the movie is pretty solid, too, with the immensely talented Hugo Weaving delivering a great performance! In both the comic book and the film, V's suits him perfectly, representing his ambiguous and unpredictable personality.
3. JASON'S HOCKEY MASK ( FRIDAY THE 13th FILM SERIES, 1982-...)
Last horror-related mask, I promise! And although some might think that Michael Myers should have landed the #3 position, I'm going to go with Jason for one simple reason: even the non-horror fans, even the people who don't watch movies know that there's a fictional killer wearing a hockey mask. They might not know about his origin, they might not know about his name, but they all know about the mask! Interestingly enough, Jason didn't get to wear it until Part III; however, it caught on and quickly became his signature accessory!
2. BATMAN'S MASK ( BATMAN FILM SERIES, 1989-...)
Batman has the best gadgets, the faster cars and one of the most famous superhero masks of all time. Out of all the superheroes, Batman's suit is probably the greatest one since it's directly linked to his origin story in the most ingenious way possible. Using his personal fear of bats to his advantage, Batman became a symbol, an idea, the watchful guardian of Gotham who cast terror into the hearts of every villain who stood in his way.
1. DARTH VADER'S MASK ( STAR WARS SAGA,1977-...)
First on the list is none other the Darth Vader! We all know and love everything about this character--well, except from the Hayden Christensen parts. Starting off as a Jedi who wanted more power, Anakin Skywalker eventually abandoned his close friend Obi-Wan and the rest of order, succumbing to the Sith temptations of chancellor Palpatine. After an epic battle with his former master, Anakin was injured so badly that he needed a life-support suit to survive. Apart from the cybernetic body parts, Vader also received his iconic helmet, a helmet no rebel scum wanted to see at close range!
