With Marvel now starting to move towards production on Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, I thought it time for a bit of an update on said movie. So, without further ado, here’s where things are currently at.

Whilst Marvel Studios has a thing for shooting over here in the UK, it’s been confirmed by Wright that Ant-Man will not be taking that route. Recently speaking to ScreenDaily, the writer/director said, “Ironically, Ant-Man was meant to shoot in London but London is full because I guess that Pinewood extension got turned down.”

In terms of production, the film is to start shooting midway through next year, with a script having been put together by Wright and Joe Cornish. As for plot, there’s very little out there right now. It’s strongly rumoured that Janet van Dyne, aka Wasp, will feature in the film, which seems very possible given that she’s generally a love interest for Hank Pym. Parks & Recreation‘s Rashida Jones is apparently in contention for the role, but that’s far from certain at this point.

Now, the main man himself, Henry Pym. At present, the current front-runner – according to various sources – is Paul Rudd. As a big Rudd guy going back to his Halloween: Curse of Michael Myers days, I’m definitely on board with that choice. Best known for his comedic roles in the likes of Anchorman, This is 40 and Role Models, I think Rudd could bring a hell of a lot to the Hank Pym character. At 44, he’d also be one of the older heads in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One other name that was previously in the frame was Joseph Gordon-Levitt, although that option seems to be off the table at this point.

So, that’s pretty much where we’re at right now, but expect to be hearing a lot more on Ant-Man over the next year or so.

Ant-Man is currently scheduled to kick off Marvel’s Phase Three of films with a 31st July, 2015 release.
