What do Batwing, Falcon, Black Panther, and Miles Morales have in common? Black and Hispanic comic book heroes have been around since the 1960s with the introduction of Black Panther and later that year Falcon. These characters came with their own hometown and origin story. Black Panther was born into royalty in the city of Wokanda, an island right near Africa. A radioactive spider bit Miles Morales. Falcon is, well, a falcon. A common question these days is, “Why isn’t there more diversity in comic books and comic book movies?” Well, let’s take a look:

We’ve already gotten the Blade franchise, and Zoe Saldana is suiting up as the alien assassin, Gamora, and Falcon is going to fly new heights in the upcoming Marvel film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. So whom are we missing? Ever since 2011’s Green Lantern bomb, fans have been begging for a John Stewart, Green Lantern reboot. Personally, I think this is the wrong move for Warner Brothers to take. People are familiar with the Hal Jordan character if they liked the movie or not. However, the introduction of John Stewart will add a diverse roster to the upcoming Justice League film scheduled for 2017. What about another diverse Lantern, Simon Baz? For those who aren’t aware, Simon Baz was created for DC’s New 52. This Arab-American has joined the JLA and can be a cool selection for the DC Cinematic Universe.

What about Marvel’s African American lineup? As I stated previously, a genetically altered spider bit Miles Morales when he was only 13 years old. His interesting relationship with his friend Ganke and his father can make for some serious dialogue in an upcoming Spidey film. Miles isn’t the only African American Marvel has to offer! A new team is about to assemble in Marvel Now! The Mighty Avengers will consist of Nick Cage, Blue Marvel (Don’t worry, I don’t know who this is either,) Falcon Monica Rambeau, Victor Alvarez (The new power man,) Ronin, She-Hulk, Superior-Spiderman, and the White Tiger. Where to start! Luke Cage has been a fan favorite for a long time now, with his introduction in the Ultimate Spiderman television show, but when can we see him suit up with Tony Stark and the rest of the Avengers! Speculation has it that he will appear in the upcoming Joss Whedon show, Marvel’s Agents of SHEILD. I think this is a GREAT idea! A common team in the comics has always been the duo between Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Can you imagine the two duking it out against a bunch of katana wielding ninjas? If you make it, nerds will come!

We also NEED to have a Black Panther movie! He’s practically a black version of Batman! He has faced off against both Namor and Captain America! Black Panther has also married the former leader if the X-Men, Storm! Haven’t we also seen Spawn on the big screen? Well, have we? Let’s face it, Spawn was an alright film but had lots of errors that can be fixed with modern day CGI. Spawn also met the devil. When you meet the devil, everything gets cooler. So what do you think? Do we deserve the Mighty Avengers? Which of these black characters would you like to see adapted to the big screen? Leave your answers in the comment section below!
