I was lucky enough to get included on a list to see Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues tonight at the Ritz East in Philadelphia, PA.
My Rating: A -
Coming into this film, I was a bit skeptic. Sure I really liked the first Anchorman back in 2004, but why so long for a sequel? Would it live up to the hype of seeing Ron Burgandy everywhere on television? The answer is a resounding YES. Anchorman 2 is very funny from beginning to end. The humor is often outrageous and silly but there's even more satire and a bit of a message thrown in about what news has become. We get sort of a backstory on where the type of bull crap news we see and hear today may have started from (had these characters been real).
Everyone is back from the first film and they're all up to the task. I'd hate to ruin any scenes of laughter for you but their are some top flight, brilliant cameos that will have you howling with laughter. Where the first film seemed more like extras clipped together to make a film (as evidenced that there was a whole other separate DVD entitled Wake Up Ron Burgandy), this feels like it has a written script and ideas. Don't get me wrong the humor is off the wall and the movie runs a bit too long at almost two hours. I am not sure if I saw the final theatrical cut of the film but my guess is that this will teeter between PG-13 and R. If I did not see the final cut then they could maybe trim about 10-15 minutes of the film. Not that there's scenes that drag, but two hours for an Anchorman movie is a little too long. A tightened pace would benefit the film.
That's really all I can say about the film, it's really funny and fans of the first film will adore this one too. I happen to think this is even an improvement over the first film and that's rare from sequels, especially one's that get released nine years after the first film. Bravo Adam McKay and Will Ferrell!
