Artists are an interesting breed. They often lead lives that are works of art in their own right, so it’s no surprise that a plethora of movies are based on them. The word eccentric does not even begin to describe the artists mentioned in this list of movies inspired by famous painters, photographers, entertainers, and musicians.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)
Easily one of the most visually stunning and inspirational movies ever made, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is based on the life of French Elle’s editor-in-chief, Jean-Dominique Bauby.
On the 5th of December 1955, Bauby suffered a stroke and lapsed into a coma. He regained consciousness 20 days later, only to realise that his entire body was paralyzed, except for sensitivity in his head and right eye. The movie documents Bauby’s life pre and post coma, and how he finished writing his memoir by blinking from his right eye. The memoir titled Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) took 10 months and 200,000 blinks to write, and is the central narrative of the movie. The movie also focuses on Bauby’s relationships with his estranged wife and son.
