1. Thir13en Ghosts (2001)

Thir13en Ghosts details the horrific trials of a ghost hunter and a ghost rights activist (seems legit) in a mansion-cum-ghost dungeon. The mansion is part of the ghost hunter’s inheritance, and contains a machine which is a direct portal to hell. Why someone would build such a thing is anyone’s guess, but the movie does manage to leave you terrified.

2. The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

A family goes on vacation, and is directed to a shortcut by a gas station attendant en route. Any horror movie enthusiast can tell you that when a shortcut sounds extremely convenient and practical, it isn’t; it’s a trap. They end up stumbling upon an abandoned nuclear testing site and what ensues is a fight for survival against some seriously ugly, cannibalistic hobos.

3. The Shining (1980)

Jack takes up a job as caretaker of a resort in winter, which already seems like a bad idea, because who goes to these places off-season? The isolation causes his psychic son to see visions of the hotel’s bloody past, and Jack to slip into psychosis. This is probably a good reminder to stock up on medication before you go to a deserted location far from civilization.

A couple move into a house which is inhabited by a demonic entity. When all the usual ghost stuff starts happening, they try to seek help. When that doesn’t work out, they set up a camera to try to capture it on film. The ghost takes offense to this, and is further angered when they try to communicate with it via Ouija board, so it decides to wreak further havoc, as one would.

5. The Grudge (2004)

Part 2 of our top movie picks for the perfect stay-at-home Halloween

The Grudge follows a student working in a Japanese hospital for college credit. She rents a house which is under a curse that manifests itself in the form of horrifying supernatural beings. She probably could have avoided it if she checked the bathrooms beforehand; with the masses of long hair and black water in the tub, this was a pretty bad deal from the get-go.
