This Means War (2012) director McG is clearly a great cinema lover, as seen through his including so many classic film references in his romantic action movie. It’s a shame that not many movie lovers spotted the hidden stories McG tells.
Therefore, here is one of his little Easter eggs.
When Lauren (Reese Witherspoon) prepares for her lonely DVD-watching evening in her kitchen and the two “gentleman spies,” FDR Foster (Chris Pine) and Tuck (Tom Hardy), secretly install spy gadgets in her apartment, the comedy Western movie, Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid can be spotted on her TV screen.
This is an unusual tragic comedy Western from 1969, based on true events, starring Paul Newman as the eloquent and clever Butch and Robert Redford as the cool Sundance Kid - both gentlemanly bandits who want to stop the robbing.
Unfortunately, they can’t retire because the head hunter Joe Lefors wants to see them dead and chases after them. During their pursuit through the country, they are accompanied by a woman torn between two men, which some call a ménage a trois.
Yes indeed, it’s a similar constellation as with Lauren, FDR, Tuck and Heinrich (Till Schweiger), who wants to see them dead as revenge for his murdered brother.
Nevertheless, as I don’t know for sure if McG had all this in mind when chosing this movie reference, I think it fits great with the plot and the tricky situation between Lauren, FDR and Tuck.
