Black Sails takes everything we learned about pirate life from Captain Jack Sparrow and throws it out the window. The new series by Starz gives us a pirate story that resembles something more along the lines of what many gamers have experienced this past year in Assassins Creed: Black Flag.

Produced by Michael Bay and directed by Neil Marshall (The Decent, Game of Thrones “Blackwater”) Black Sails is not your typical PG-13 Disney blockbuster. The show has grit, nudity and plenty of moments that will resonate with history buffs. The opening shot in the pilot is that of a ship being attacked by what appear to be pirates. This scene works especially well thanks to the production value and direction that were chosen for the pilot. It is shot beautifully using actual open water instead of the typical CGI effects and studio backlots that have harmed other shows.
