X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to garner some serious buzz this weekend with the mutant ensemble movie set to drop a new trailer during the Super Bowl.
But it's the rumors of a possible Gambit movie that have stolen the headlines recently.
In an interview with Empire, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler has revealed a Gambit movie might be closer than you think and Channing Tatum is almost certainly locked in for the lead:
I'm dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum. That doesn't have to be a great big movie. It's a thief in New Orleans, it's a whole different story. He's on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He's such a sweetheart.
Tatum is a huge X-Men fan and considering he comes from the New Orleans area, he seems like the ideal choice to play the Cajun card-thrower.
Tatum agrees, admitting so much during a recent press junket for White House Down:
I would like to play Gambit. Gambit’s my favorite. I’m from New Orleans, around that area. My dad’s from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real.
The last time we saw Gambit on screen was Taylor Kitsch's strangely unnecessary and out of place performance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This is a mistake that Tatum clearly doesn't want to repeat:
No knock on Taylor Kitsch, though, ’cause I actually like his Gambit, but I’ve always lived around Cajun people. Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking guy. He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He’s a thief. He kind of rode the line.
I think Tatum would be great choice for Gambit and he clearly has a respect and reverence for the character. I say sign him up immediately!
