When I first heard that Jesse Eisenberg had been cast as Lex Luthor in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie, I was a bit baffled. This certainly wasn’t what I had expected, and it certainly was going to leave a lot of people unhappy. However, the more I think about it, the more I like this news.
Of course I would have preferred Bryan Cranston, but who wouldn’t? Joaquin Pheonix could have been fantastic. However, I find Jesse Eisenberg to be a very intriguing choice.
Let’s get this out of the way now: I hate Man of Steel. I don’t think it is a good movie and while I have many complaints about the film, an over-arching one is that I found it uninteresting. So news about the sequel that is risky makes me think that I may at least find this more interesting. Maybe not, but we’ll see. At least this has the potential to say something new.
Many people have pointed out that today’s self-made billionaires are the socially awkward Mark Zuckerberg-types that Eisenberg plays so well (it’s unfortunate that every article about this has to somehow reference The Social Network, but it’s kind of unavoidable).
I also like the idea of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor being the same age. This makes Bruce Wayne the “old guy” of the group. Before this announcement I could imagine Luthor and Wayne being these parallel good/evil equivalents, and I’m kind of glad that they aren’t going to be.
In any case, I’m not saying that this is good or bad, just interesting. I still don’t expect much from Batman vs. Superman as it already seems like a disaster (and I would be so glad to be wrong). Oh, and brief side-note, I was so happy to hear that they were delaying this film because I thought it meant that they really cared about making the best film possible. Too bad it sounds like it was a business decision, and not an artistic one. At least we’re getting Ant-Man sooner…
