First, I want to apologize to the 700 or so readers of my previous article. When I first researched the issue, it appeared that the new Expendabelles film had Slyvester Stallone's name all over it. As It turns out, Bustle.com offers news to the contrary. Bustle.com states the ridiculous plot has been written by two Women! I WASN'T. READY to read that at all. If this bit of news is true, I owe an apology to Mr. Stallone.
Now, just for a recap, lets go over that plot one more time:
"When America’s Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world’s top nuclear scientists, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as the right man for the job and that this is a mission so impossible that only women can handle it. The only way in: some of the world’s deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator–and instead save the scientist and the day."
Now my disappointment turns to writers Kristen Smith and Karen McCullah. As they are the ones who came up with this mess. *NEWSFLASH* ladies! Just because you are two women, it doesn't make this idea any better! The idea that women are involved in this makes my stomach turn. Doesn't anyone want to make a more uplifing, more empowering film involving a full cast of women? Here is the execerpt from Bustle.com on the involvement of these two writers:
"Lerner also reportedly that Robert Luketic has been brought on as the director to accompany the film’s screenwriters, Legally Blonde scribes Kristen Smith and Karen McCullah. Luketic, known for directing rom-coms like Killers (Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher), The Ugly Truth (Heigl and Gerard Butler), and Legally Blonde, is set to helm the lady version of a movie that should be so chock of full of action it makes Jean-Claude Van Damme winded just watching it. See, he’s super qualified because his main area of expertise is meet-cutes"
Wait what?! The writers and director of this....
Are in charge of writing and directing this?!?!.....
Look, I understand writers switch genre's all the time. However, this choice seems like a looooong stretch to me. If they are experimenting with action films, I don't think this is the project to experiment with. I don't understand why WOMEN would do this to other women. Actually, I don't understand why ANYONE would want to make a cast of Women look so ridiculous on film.
I know that every news source you read on the internet should probably be taken with a grain of salt, but this bit of news hit like a ton of bricks. Let me reiterate that current plot is passe, dehumanizing and you will NEVER get an actress of caliber to be a part of this. There is still a small glimmer of hope. Maybe the public is being trolled into thinking this is true when it actually isn't *shrug*
