The Guardians of the Galaxy trailer aired last night on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! Show, with Chris Pratt's intergalactic introduction to the upcoming space adventure, diligently done by Marvel Studios but poorly introduced. This is Marvel's first time to really introduce a movie with characters very few people actually recognize, but obviously that isn't a problem for the studio that owns two of the top five biggest box office openings in history.
In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. In order to evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a group of misfits including Gamora, Rocket, Drax the Destroyer and Groot. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Here is a quick summary of the trailer:
- Peter Quill finds the Orb with childish intrigue
- Korath the Pursuer puts down his gun and asks 'Who are you?'
Marvel's signature opening logo
- Peter Quill is tortured by a blue stick-like weapon for approaching the alien messing with his headphones
- Rhomann Dey analyzes the Guardians with some background information
- Star-Lord flies his space vessel over the Nova Corps home planet Xandar
- Rocket Raccoon rapidly fires while standing on an angry Groot's shoulders
- A new yellow logo premieres rather than the original stainless steel logo.
The trailer features other important characters such as Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou), and the Collector (Benicio Del Toro).
The movie seems cohesive, intriguing, exceedingly more than I could've hoped for, but the comedic approach to the trailer was slightly disappointing. Other than that, I could try to come up with some things to complain about, but when they came out of my mouth I realized how stupid they were compared to all the complaints I legitimately have about other movies.
Everyone has been worried that Groot and Rocket Raccoon would look too silly in film for this movie to be successful, but the trailer has definitely proven that the worries were for nothing. Rocket clearly functions like a contributing member of the team, and didn't seem out of place in the slightest.
The only thing I wished we had seen in the trailer is Thanos. Thanos is known throughout Marvel as "The Mad Titan" because he is in love with Death, and is more recently known for being the real villain behind The Avengers movie. He is highly speculated to be the villain of Avengers 3, and was heavily hinted to be so by Marvel Studios Director Kevin Feige.
In the comics, he collects Infinity Stones, six different stones that, once together, give the beholder unlimited God-like powers. The Tesseract and the Aether have already been revealed to be Infinity Stones. The Orb that will be in Guardians of the Galaxy will be the third of the six stones, as well as the source of conflict in the movie.
The Nova Corps, the equivalent of an intergalactic police force, also play a big role in the film. What you may not know about the Nova Corps, however, is that the superhero NOVA comes from the Nova Corps, and is brought into the corps by a dying Rhomann Dey.. who is alive and well in this movie. On top of that, Nova and the Guardians are part of a Marvel team-up storyline called Annihilation, along with the Silver Surfer and Quasar. Could Annihilation be Marvel's big team-up movie after The Avengers?
Glenn Close as Nova Commander Rael was also nowhere to be seen?
